Logic and Metaphysics∗

چکیده
In this article, we canvass a few of the interesting topics that philosophers can pursue as part of the simultaneous study of logic and metaphysics. To keep the discussion to a manageable length, we limit our survey to deductive, as opposed to inductive, logic. Though most of this article will focus on the ways in which logic can be deployed in the study of metaphysics, we begin with a few remarks about how metaphysics might be needed to understand what logic is. When we ask the question, “What is logic and what is its subject matter?”, there is no obvious answer. There have been so many different kinds of studies that have gone by the name ‘logic’ that it is difficult to give an answer that applies to them all. But there are some basic commonalities. Most philosophers would agree that logic presupposes (1) the existence of a language for expressing thoughts or meanings, (2) certain analytic connections between the thoughts that ground and legitimize the inferential relations among them, and (3) that the analytic connections and inferential relations can be studied systematically by investigating (often formally) the logical words and sentences used to express the thoughts so connected and related. For example, analytic connections give rise to various patterns of inferences expressed by certain logical words and phrases

The Metaphysical Status of Logic
The purpose of this paper is to examine the status of logic from a metaphysical point of view – what is logic grounded in and what is its relationship with metaphysics. There are three general lines that we can take. 1) Logic and metaphysics are not continuous, neither discipline has no bearing on the other one. This seems to be a rather popular approach, at least implicitly, as philosophers of...
متن کاملConstructive Logic for All
It is a commonplace in recent metaphysics that one’s logical commitments go hand in hand with one’s metaphysics. Brouwer, Heyting and Dummett have each championed the move to constructive (intuitionistic) reasoning on the grounds of anti-realism. I hope to break this close connection, to explain why a realist ought to reason constructively.
متن کاملexistence, definedness, and the semantics of possibility andnecessity
In this paper, I will address just some of ProfessorWilliamson’s treatment of necessitism in hisModal Logic as Metaphysics [28]. I will give an account of what space might remain for a principled and logically disciplined contingentism. I agree withWilliamson that those interested in the metaphysics of modality would do well to take quantified modal logic—and its semantics—seriously in order to...
متن کاملThe Necessity of Metaphysics
The purpose of this thesis is to demonstrate that metaphysics is a necessary discipline – necessary in the sense that all areas of philosophy, all areas of science, and in fact any type of rational activity at all would be impossible without a metaphysical background or metaphysical presuppositions. Because of the extremely strong nature of this claim, it is not possible to put forward a very s...
